Montara is a census-designated place (CDP) in San Mateo County, California, United States. The population was 2,950 at the 2000 census.

Montara is located at approximately 20 miles south of San Francisco and 50 miles north of Santa Cruz, California. Neighboring towns include Pacifica to the north, Moss Beach, El Granada, and Half Moon Bay to the south. According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 10.2 km² (3.9 mi²), all land.

The rare and endangered species Hickman's potentilla occurs at the northern extremity of Montara on the slopes above Martini Creek at elevations ranging from 10 to 125 meters.The Montara light station demarks the northern point of the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve, a holding of Special biological Significance owned by the State of California.

In 2003, Montara became one of the first towns to use eminent domain to take ownership of its water system from a publicly traded corporation. Montara residents continue to pay the highest rate in all of California for their water.
